The island Phuket (with its similarly named city) in the south of Thailand has a rich culture, beautiful scenery and a friendly population. It's a magnificent diving destination with great reefs and an abundance of fish. Phuket is shaped like a rough pearl and therefore has the nickname 'Pearl of the south'. On the west coast of the Andaman Sea there are a dozen of beaches with fine, white sand, separated from each other by land tongues and hilly forests. The mainland in the neighborhood of the island is called 'Greater Phuket' and has lots of beautiful scenery, including the national park Khaolak. From Phuket it's a one-and-a-half hour drive. On the other side of the mainland, there a little place called Krabi (Two hour trip from Phuket) and a bit further on, there's the 'bounty island' Koh Lanta (four hour trip from Phuket).
| Historical Place | The Talang National Museum can tell you all about the history of Thailand and Phuket self. Patong Beach is the most popular beach (it’s along the middle of the west coast, about 4 km long), to the north and south it is quieter. The beaches are all of the ‘idyllic and tropical' type, and are well-known for the paradise-like atmosphere. The beaches on the mainland are also beautiful. You can, for example go on canoe-trips along mangrove-islands, or scuba-dive and snorkel the clear waters. | | Nature | In the protected National Park you can see the unharmed remains of the jungle. Furthermore, everything else can best be described - as we already did above - as true 'bounty beaches'. The outer most south/west point of Phuket is called Laem Phron Thep and it's an ideal place to watch a beautiful, romantic sunset. For the romantics among us... | | Avg. temp. summer | 29 degrees | | Avg. temp. winter | 28 degrees | | Festival & going out | Every year a festival, originating from China, is held. What is it about? It's about 'plenty', about 'color' and a nine day party. Really something you mustn’t miss if you are on Phuket in October. The most popular beach (Patong Beach) and Patong city, is where you'll find all the shops, (fish)restaurants and many other bars, etc. | | Watersports | The clear water surrounding the island and the coral reefs make Phuket an excellent diving destination. It might be frightening at first, but there's even a chance you'll meet a whale-shark during one of your dives. In contradiction to the name, whale-sharks aren't as big as whales... Furthermore, all other, various types of water sports are available. | | Recreation & various | You can make many different trips, among others, to a Gibbon center (a monkey species) and a kind of crocodile and pearl park (were pearls are harvested from oysters). |
